Guide
How many death certificates do I need?
There’s no single right number, but ordering several certified copies at registration saves time and money later. Here’s how to judge it.
A rough guide
Many families find that 4 to 6 certified copies cover them. Each bank, pension provider and insurer may want to see an original at the same time, and posting them back and forth one at a time slows everything down.
Why copies you make don’t count
Organisations need a certified copy issued by the register office — a photocopy or scan isn’t accepted. Copies are cheaper if you order them when you register rather than later.
How to decide
- Count the banks, pensions and insurers involved
- Add one or two for solicitors or probate
- Order a couple spare — it’s cheaper than going back
