Executor checklist: what an executor does
Being an executor means carrying out the wishes in someone’s will. It can feel daunting, but it breaks down into a manageable sequence.
Your main responsibilities
- Find the will and confirm you’re named as executor
- Register the death and order certificates
- Value the estate — assets and debts at the date of death
- Apply for probate if it’s needed
- Settle any debts and tax (including Inheritance Tax)
- Distribute what’s left as the will sets out
- Keep clear records throughout
