Executor checklist: what an executor does

Being an executor means carrying out the wishes in someone’s will. It can feel daunting, but it breaks down into a manageable sequence.

Your main responsibilities

  • Find the will and confirm you’re named as executor
  • Register the death and order certificates
  • Value the estate — assets and debts at the date of death
  • Apply for probate if it’s needed
  • Settle any debts and tax (including Inheritance Tax)
  • Distribute what’s left as the will sets out
  • Keep clear records throughout
